Renowned Italian barebow archer Cinzia Noziglia has set a new world record for the 60-arrow 18-metre qualifying round at the European Indoor Championships in Croatia, shooting 556 points to beat Lina Bjorklund’s previous world best by four.

“I’m really happy, really satisfied. I’ve been shooting quite well recently and I’m so happy I haven‘t lost any of those points that I usually shoot while training,” said Noziglia.

“This is a wonderful competition. Difficult but fantastic.”

Simone Barbieri (559) was top barebow men’s seed, Italian pair Matteo Borsani (592) and Chiara Rebagliati (584) qualified first in the recurve events, while compound poles went to world number one Ella Gibson (591) and Mathias Fullerton (599).

“That score is never bad but I’m a little annoyed I missed on the last end,” said Fullerton. “I’m still happy with a good lead and first place [in qualifying], I’m up by three points.”

The compound women’s title in Varaždin is expected to come down to a final between Gibson and Elisa Roner.

The pair met, for the second consecutive year, in the compound women’s gold medal match at the Indoor Archery World Series Finals just a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas. Roner won – for the second consecutive year.

“It got a little bit rocky in the end,” said Gibson after today’s qualifying round. She dropped four of her nine lost points in the last five ends.

“I think I know what I need to do to keep going through the rest of the week.”

Competition continues on Wednesday with eliminations at the European indoors.
